Application Process
To apply for Legal Aid, we may need some further information from you. We will talk you through what is required on a case-by-case basis, but the sort of information that would be useful to have handy would be:
- Your National Insurance Number
- If you are on benefits, what type of benefit you receive eg, Universal Credit.
- If you are employed, your last 3 months wage slips and bank statement
Police Station Representation
Any person who is arrested and taken to a police station will automatically qualify for free legal advice. No application process is required, simply call Quinn Land Solicitors on our 24/7 emergency number and we will attend the Police Station to represent you for free.

Magistrates’ Court Representation
Applying for Legal Aid can be longwinded and complex. Let us do that for you for free!
There are various tests that need to be satisfied for Legal Aid to be granted. Your case has to meet an ‘Interest of Justice’ test (ie, is your case serious enough to justify legal aid) and in certain circumstances, a means test – are you financially eligible for Legal Aid.

Crown Court Representation
All criminal court cases start out in the Magistrates’ Court. Some of the more serious cases might then be transferred to the Crown Court. If Legal Aid is granted for the Magistrates’ Court stage, it will be automatically extended to cover the Crown Court stage.
Please note that if your case goes to the Crown Court, whilst your legal representation will remain free and you will never owe us a penny, in certain circumstances (that is to say, if you have significant means), you may need to pay a contribution to the Court to cover some of the costs of your case.
If you are found not guilty thereafter, all of those costs will be returned to you with interest.

Legal Aid refused
